How long does the Freeing Evil Dave subquest take?

It's highly variable, taking anywhere from 30 minutes to potentially over 90 minutes. The main factor is how quickly you can determine the correct combination of spices needed for Evil Dave's stew through trial and error.

What are the requirements for this subquest?

You need to have started Recipe for Disaster by completing the Lumbridge Guide part, and have completed Gertrude's Cat and Shadow of the Storm. You also need the ability to perform an action requiring 25 Cooking (boostable) if making stews yourself.

What items are needed?

You need a cat (kitten or lazy cat not recommended due to lower catch rate) and several bowls of stew (up to 9, can be bought or made).

How does finding the right spice combination work?

You need to catch hellrats using your cat in Evil Dave's basement to obtain four types of coloured spices (brown, red, yellow, orange), each coming in 1-4 doses. You must then add different doses (1, 2, or 3) of each spice to bowls of stew and feed them to Evil Dave. He will give hints ('one spice is correct', 'none are right') until you discover the exact required dosage (1-3) for all four spices.

What is a Hellcat?

After your cat catches 7 hellrats during this quest, it permanently transforms into a Hellcat, a cosmetic variant with a fiery appearance. This change is purely visual.

What are Spicy Stews used for?

After the quest, you can intentionally make spicy stews using the spices gathered from hellrats. Specific combinations of spice doses can provide temporary, random boosts (or drains) to various skills, similar to Stat-boosting stews from OSRS Wiki, making them useful for achieving higher skill levels temporarily.

Can Ironmen use this service?

Yes. Ironmen need a cat and bowls of stew (obtainable through Cooking).
